Burr School's Japanese Program
Burr School offers the unique program of Japanese Language and Culture to all of its students during the regular school day, as well as offering Japanese after-school programs all year.
Japanese Language and Culture Classes include:
- Learning the 4 skills of Japanese: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking
- Learning about Japanese culture, traditions, holidays, folktales, geography, clothing, food, manners, and festivals
- Experience with visiting Japanese artists
- Experience with two Japanese student teachers per year
- Creating Japanese-style art
- Making Origami (objects from folded paper)
- Watching first-hand videos of Japanese schools,
homes, festivals, cities, and lifestyles - Singing Japanese songs
- Playing Japanese Taiko drums
- Using computers to practice Japanese
- Creating student-designed projects about Japan
- Participate in a yearly "Japan Day" event which involves student performances and hands-on Japanese activities for all students
- Attending field trips to experience Japanese foods, supermarkets, art, theater, gardens, and more!

Japanese After-School Programs
Japanese After-School Programs are offered to students as enrichment experiences. They include:
- Select students (9 per year) practice on authentic Taiko drums, performing at assemblies and events in Chicago.
Okinawan Dance Group
Japan Club, for 1st and 2nd Graders
- Students make a variety of Japanese art and craft items, and also learn how to dance in Japanese style.
